We are engineering biosensor bacteria to detect and report on target DNA sequences, with potential applications for non-invasive sampling of the gut, or as a low-cost DNA diagnostic device.
Some bacteria can pick up new genes from DNA floating around them. We are studying the dynamics of this process, partly to improve our DNA biosensors.
How do naturally competent bacteria, which actively pull in DNA from their environment, defend against parasitic DNA?
Interesting things happen when you mix different types of bacteria (including pretty pictures).
